Who do you think would survive a massive zombie outbreak? Who definitely would not?
I'd be willing to say that marathon runners would survive for quite some time. People who are paced, in shape, dedicated, and can run for hours on end.
As for who would not, I'd say paramedics would probably be some of the first to go for obvious reasons.
I am thinking that people living in very remote areas would survive. I mean way off the grid, Ted Kazcinsky types. And I think every guy who has had a Rambo fantasy will be the first to go.
I'll disagree with you whole-heartedly on that last point. While yes there are some spastic kids and infirm elderly who don't have much of a chance, just writing off those whole groups is a big mistake a lot of zombie writers/fans make. There are plenty of resilient and quick learning kids out there, and there are plenty of elderly with amazing skill sets. I for one would prefer to have an older person who had been through hard times (you know, actually hard times where they didn't get spend time on the internet writing about fictional zombie situations...) to bring that knowledge with them.
The Navy would be basically sorted, apart from when they needed to do a food a fuel run.
Underground military bases are a given.
Amazonian tribes?
People on islands?
The worst thing would be, if you lived remotely, came into town to do your annual supplies replenishment,
and...oh fuck!
Anywhere that can be fenced off!
Airports/ Industrial estates?
Nascar arenas? although the dome in New Orleans didn't go down too well.
I think the Taliban in the mountain ranges would probably make it along with Richard Branson and his balloons.
Everyone else is dog food!
You would make it for some time, but everyone elses plans would fuck with yours, leaving a big gate open for them all to get you!!!!!!!!
I really think that Eskimos could survive pretty well. They live in freezing temperatures and very uninhabited areas already. They probably wouldn't even notice the zombies...
I think it largely depends on how much warning you get. One staple of zombie movies is that it happens overnight--out of nowhere your neighbors start jonesing for your brain. No matter how many guns, cans of food, and generators you have stored out in the barn--if you wake up, go to the bathroom, and your zombified dog is waiting for you, it's game over, man.
My favorite zombie stories are the ones about people who aren't prepared at all, who never even thought about survival, who make it anyway because they got a lucky break early on. The Dawn of the Dead remake had some great stories like that. I think it's just more dramatic than a guy sitting on the porch of his mountain shack with a shotgun going "Yep, I was waitin' for this."
I think alot of people would hope to find themselves being lucky or going down in a blaze of glory. I think alot of people would consider themselves as the type to survive but would probably get munched alongside everyone else.
How about inmates of our fine correctional facilities? They would survive the initial onslaught only to find themselves starving in their cells. For that matter, how about patients in locked facilities. They would survive. But I think the more interesting implication is that if these people were the seeds of our post-zombie society. How is that for a story starter, Dave?
